For those of us still on dial-up, there was a recent news item that might be of interest: AT&T is offering a $10.00 per month DSL term plan to Bellsouth customers who have not previously subscribed to DSL.

The yearly term plan is the same as the basic plan with speeds up to 768 Kbps. This plan is the result of a concession AT&T made to the FTC, in order for AT&T to become the new owners of BellSouth, and Cingular.

The plan is obscured somewhat on the internet services page - you will have to scroll down towards the bottom of the page to see the link for "Term contract plans available."

AT&T high-speed Internet service featuring downstream speeds up to 768 Kbps. is available for $10 per month for customers who:

* Are new residential customers who have not previously subscribed to broadband service from AT&T or the former BellSouth (Note: This offer is available in 22 states where AT&T and the former BellSouth currently offer high-speed Internet service.)
* Order service online (Note: This offer is not available by calling AT&T.)
* Agree to a 12-month term commitment. There is an early termination fee of $50 for customers who do not complete the 12-month commitment. However, after completing the 12-month term, customers can receive service on a month-to-month basis with no term commitment; their price will remain at $10 per month until Dec. 29, 2009. At that time, the monthly rate will revert to the market price for this speed tier.
* Have AT&T local phone service (Note: Rates for local service vary by state and are in addition to the $10 high-speed Internet offer.)
* Agree to pay additional monthly charges such as taxes which are customary for high-speed Internet services.

Free DSL Modem for Upgrades from Dial to AT&T High-speed Internet Service.
A free DSL modem is available to customers who:

* Currently have Dial service with AT&T or the former BellSouth
* Have AT&T local phone service
* Agree to a 12-month term commitment. There is an early termination fee of $37.50 to $75 for customers who do not complete the 12-month commitment.

Terms and Conditions
FastAccess DSL Lite with term agreement: Requires subscription to FastAccess DSL Lite (Downstream speeds up to 768Kbps/Upstream speeds up to 128Kbps) for twelve (12) months from the date of activation. Eligibility: customers who order online and who have not previously subscribed to FastAccess DSL service from BellSouth or high-speed Internet service from AT&T. FastAccess DSL is subject to the terms and conditions of the BellSouth Internet Service Agreement (“Service Agreement”). Termination of FastAccess service, or if service is terminated for violation of the Service Agreement, prior to the expiration of twelve (12) months from the activation date, will incur a $50 termination fee that represents a portion of the network activation and setup costs foregone as a result of such termination.

Free DSL Modem with term agreement: Offer available to active subscribers of AT&T or BellSouth Dial service who purchase and receive FastAccess DSL. In exchange for a free DSL modem customers must maintain FastAccess DSL service for at least twelve (12) months from the date the modem was shipped or installed by BellSouth, and pay all applicable charges in connection with FastAccess service in a timely manner. If FastAccess service is terminated or in the event service is terminated for a violation of the BellSouth Internet Service Agreement, including but not limited to failure to pay the monthly FastAccess service charge, an early termination charge of $75.00 (representing the full price of the modem) if service is terminated between 0 and 6 months from the date the modem was shipped or installed by BellSouth or $37.50 (representing one half of the price of the modem) if service is terminated more than 6 months but less than 12 months from the date the modem was shipped or installed by BellSouth will be incurred.
